In the fall of 1959 the 27th Fighter Interceptor Squadron (FIS) moved to Loring AFB and began flying F-106As. The squadron was "deactivated" on June 30, 1971. The personnel and equipment were redesignated as the 83rd FIS on July 1, 1971 remaining at Loring.
The 27th was "reactivated" as a Tactical Fighter Squadron (TFS) at McDill AFB on July 1, 1971. This was part of an effort to reorganize the First Fighter Group squadrons of World War II. The squadrons included the 27th, 71st and 94th, who were typically assigned to different bases in the F-106 Air Defense era.
The 83rd FIS was deactivated on June 30, 1972. I presume that the 49th FIS (Det 1) took over at Loring at that time. Other units followed.
