Palm Springs Air Museum, Palm Springs CA
F-106B 57-2509 resides as a static display at the Palm Springs Air Museum, Palm Springs CA. She is painted in her glorious B-1B Chase Plane colors with the blue tail flash, plus some "California Girl" Nose Art. The B-1B Chase F-106s were assigned to the AFPRO at Palmdale and maintained by Rockwell. She was SOLD via Private purchase in Dec 2016 to Palm Springs Air Museum, Palm Springs CA by WESTERNAIR INC. at El Paso International, El Paso Texas who in early April 2000 purchased 6 of the 7 un-flyable QF-106s at Tyndall AFB, FL. They departed on several flatbed 18 wheelers bound for El Paso, TX. Having been purchased by a private individual (Westernair Inc) they were planned to be restored, some possibly to flyable status, however that never came to be. Only two of them remain in El Paso 57-2509 being one of them. Thanks to Dick Lewis, CMSgt, USAF (Ret) for taking these and many other photos. Only airframe with date plate is this 57-2509. Others were evidently removed at Tyndal AFB. All control stick grips are missing. All parts that were removed from 57-2509 at Tyndal before shipping to El Paso were tagged as 57-2509 parts in prep for restoration. REASON FOR TERMINATION FROM DRONE PROGRAM: 57-2509 Wire bundle fire in lower electronics bay-no structural damage from fire. STATUS OF AIRCRAFT AT TIME OF TERMINATION: QF-106B 57-2509, minimal records, fuselage exterior paint stripped, cockpit equipment removed, fuselage installed in jig.
