08 Apr 59 - Crashed - Exploded in the air near Indian Springs, NV, during a test run preparatory to the World Congress of Flight. Pilot Capt. Halvor "Hal" Ekeron ejected, but was killed.

Halvor "Hal" Ekeron - After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1951, Hal entered the Air Force, serving 2 1/2 years at Komaki AFB in Japan, then transferring to Edwards Air Force Base as a test pilot. He was selected as one of the original astronauts just before his death on April 18, 1959. His Convair F-106A jet fighter exploded in the air near Indian Springs, NV, during a test run preparatory to the World Congress of Flight. He was married and had three children. Hal is buried in Arlington National Cemetery near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

It was following this crash that led to a new ejection seat design. It was this day Convair announced it has been awarded a $1,500,000 Air Force contract for incorporation of the new ejection system in its F-106.

Conventional: Models were originally committed as TEST or BAILMENT aircraft..


TEST-to-TACTICAL: Models returned to Convair and upgraded from TAC Conventional to Vertical
instruments in 1961. Fuselage cut in half at station 412 (Aft bulkhead missile bay) and a new fuselage, cockpit section,
and nose section was installed with the latest production avionics, the same as the last F-106A 590148 and F-106B 590165.
A total of 35 aircraft (28 "A" models and 7 "B" models) were converted and reassigned to various ADC units..


Vertical, 1st Produced: First 'A' and 'B' models produced with vertical instruments.
Tactical Vertical: Models factory produced w/Tactical Vertical instruments: late 1957 and all 1958, 1959..
