Note the speed brakes remained closed. I never heard what the specific speed brake malfunction was but it resulted in both normal deployment as well as the emergency system failure. Had the emergency system remained functional, I believe 467 might have been saved. After the aircraft had slowed and I lost all control, the aircraft slowly veered off the left side of the runway. Note in the first image that my helmet is hanging down the right side of the cockpit. I decided to go over the right side of the cockpit because I had heard a story at George AFB about a F-104 which had, for some reason, landed short of the runway in a cross wind, broke-up and caught fire. The pilot survived the crash but chose to exit the cockpit on the downwind side - the bird exploded and the fire ball caught and killed him. I remembered that story as 467 became totally uncontrollable and slowly veered to the left off the runway. I departed the cockpit over the right side because it was the the up wind side - wind was essentially down the runway. I am now 87 years old [Sep 2024} and I remember that day at Edwards as if it was yesterday.

James W. Wilkinson Jr
