I had the honor of flying Gordo to and from the event out of Edwards and since considered him a good friend. He was, even then, a superb pilot. We flew over ACY on the way in and did some aerobatics in the off shore warning areas. My comment on his flying skills is not just based on the lines from "The Right Stuff".
Both ways, we did non stop with a tanker borrowed form somewhere. On the way back I let him do a touch and go from the back seat at Edwards. Those of you that instructed in the Six know how hard that is given the lousy viz from the back seat. He butchered it a bit but was better than most could do who were current in back seat landings. He very much wanted to do it again and I probably should have let him but the low level lights lit and I felt the need to assure the landing.
He took me to lunch in his Caddie convertible and, on the way, ran a stop sign. Sure enough an SP Master Seargeant of about 250lbs stopped us. I'm sure we were quite a sight, me in my orange flt suit (another several stories come to mind) and he in his blue NASA flight suit.
The Sgt obviously knew Cooper and he said something like, "Gordo, did you see that stop sign back there?". "You all be careful now", and went back to his truck.....
