William Tell Weapons Meet 1986

1986 William Tell Weapons Meet

F-106 units did not compete in WT86, WT84 was their last, but it did participate. The 119 FIS and 159 FIS were invited as range patrol aircraft and targets. Their aircraft were painted with a solid color tail as a Visual ID Target during some of the WT86 mission profiles. None of the ID Targets competed.

The tail color markings were actually not paint, but rather a press on material that was just pulled off after the meet. Range, umpire and manned profile target duties for profile three Hook and ID and Profile Four ECM targets. Non-live fire sorties. Evaluator missile sorties. The purpose of the coloring and notice different colors was so the interceptor pilot intercepting them had to correctly identify the color the particular aircraft was displaying prior to being cleared for an evaluator shot. ECM pods were carried on the left wing during the profile four missions where they were simulating cruise missiles and high speed ECM targets. Shown here with ACMI pods under the left wing for the benefit of ground computer recording displaying and controlling, during live sortie time. Entire battles were watched using ACMI (Air Combat Maneuvering Instrumentation). And since it was recorded, the actual pilots could come back and watch their engagements they had just previously fought. Very nice learning tool. Only several F-106's were modified to carry ECM pods on the left wing pylon. It was not a widespread mod. ACMI on the right wing became standard throughout the F-106 fleet in the late seventies for DACT engagements and was used where ACMI or ACMR (Air Combat Maneuvering Range) ranges were available. Also in 1986 the CF-18 entered in the competition for the first time with the Canadian team, finishing second overall behind a TAC F-15 Team.

William Tell Weapons Meet 1984

1984 William Tell Weapons Meet

William Tell 1984 was notable for a couple of reasons. This was the last year that F-106 equipped units competed, although in the next meet in 1986 the 'Six' still participated as TARGETS!  This was also the introduction of the supersonic QF-100 full-scale unmanned target drone replacing not only the PQM-102's but also the sub-scale BQM-34 'Firebee'. 1984 was also the first year since 1963 that the Canadian Armed Forces did not send a team to compete.

William Tell '84 comprised of 12 teams from 5 USAF commands or subordinate organizations. The only command to have problems deciding which units to send to Tyndall was Air Defense Tactical Air Command (ADTAC). With 17 ADTAC and ADTAC gained ANG Interceptor Squadron's to choose from and only 7 available places, the command decided to hold a competition named the 'William Tell 84 Shoot-off' to select the units to be sent to Tyndall. This comprised of a series of one day evaluations held during May 1984. Each unit's team comprised of 5 aircraft and crews (4 primary aircraft/crews plus 1 spare), maintenance/weapon loader personnel and a weapons controller team. The Weapons Controller Teams selected were from units that normally worked with the Squadron, in this case 24th NORAD, Griffiss AFB.

1982 William Tell Weapons Meet

In 1982 TAC officially changed the name of the meet from William Tell Weapons Meet to USAF Air-to-Air Weapons Meet, which also marked the return of the Pacific Air Forces and the USAF in Europe to the competition, as well as the first appearance of the F-15 "Eagle".
